Baking for each holiday is a family tradition in my family. It wouldn’t be a holiday without colorful sugar cookies! We bake them for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. Over the years we have tried many recipes. I used to buy my mom all the latest cookbooks, but somehow she always went back to her mom’s old cookbooks, tattered and torn from 80 years of use. While we have family favorite recipes for just about everything under the sun, we could never hit upon just the right sugar cookie recipe. They were always too salty, too crispy, to sweet or just not right. It took years of tasting and trials to find the perfect sugar cookie recipe.
My family has collected a large assortment of cookie cutters over the past hundred years, which have been passed on from one generation to the next. We occasionally add to the collection. When I found a traditional shamrock cookie cutter with a large handle I was delighted. To my surprise it came with sugar cookie and frosting recipes. It is by far the best sugar cookie recipe I have found, with the perfect texture and a balance of sweet to salty that tastes like shortbread. The ingredients are simple they turn out flawlessly. I spoke to the nice folks at Ann Clark Cookie Cutters in Vermont and they gave me permission to share it with you. I found out that they are a family business & the only remaining cookie cutter manufacturer in the USA. I hope you enjoy the recipe as much as I do.
Ann Clark’s Sugar Cookie Recipe
1 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
½ tsp salt
2 ½ cup sifted flour
Mix until all ingredients are well blended. Chill dough 3-4 hours before rolling.
Preheat oven to 350F. Roll out ¼ inch thick and cut. Bake about 8-10 minutes or until barely colored. Remove from cookie sheets and cool on wire racks. Cookies can be frosted or just eaten plain. I sprinkled color sugar over the cookies before baking.
